Ok its fixed, but I don't have a handle on why its fixed but it did have something to do with the permalinks.
I did as you suggested and changed to one of the other Permalinks. However, many links around the site stopped working and it looked like a lot of work to correct them.
So, I set the permalinks back to the default setting and everything was back to normal with the exception of the forum which had vanished completely. The WP page still existed but the forum didn't seem to be attached to it and the Forum Slug was correctly pointing at this page.
I did eventually find the forum tagged to the bottom of another page which was being used to display a Nextgen gallery.
I then created a new page and connected the forum to this page as detailed in the SP Integration menu, attached this new page to the WP Menu and had access to the forum again by the usual method.
And, for a reason that escapes me the Posts in the Forum can now be edited and deleted so the problem appears to be resolved. Way above my head as to how that fixed it, I'm hoping you might be able to fathom it out so I can avoid whatever caused it in the first place.
But, thanks for the help, we eventually got there, your patience and assistance is very much appreciated.

Yes, permalinks are at the default at the moment and everything is working fine.
