One final thing for now, the theme author advises that the jquery-effects-core.js is used mainly for drop-down menu effects. I don't have any so it shouldn't cause me any problems, but of course that's not to say I won't do so in the future (on this or other websites) so it would be good if a fix could be found.
Thanks for all your help thus far anyway, at least I have a working site now.
we shall see... odd that it would cause an issue, but ticket open for investigation...

Just out of interest, will you post back on this thread when the ticket has been investigated? I know you guys are busy so don't want to chase, but I would like to know if and when you look into this further. For now I have not used drop down menus on the site (as this is what the jquery is used for in the theme), but I may want to in future and so it would be good if SimplePress and my theme could play nicely.
I admit that we often don't report back on a thread when a fix is done simply because of finding them! We hope users will check out the change log that is published with each update to see if their 'bug' is resolved. Not perfect I know.
I can say, in this case, that we have resolved the issue and there will be a fix in the next release. It was an odd one but I won't bore you with the techie details!

the changelog does include the ticket... but the support topic does not... that could be a headache to manage...
and as Andy said, we try to say when something is fixed, but sometimes they do get lost...
no ETA on next version yet, but should be before the end of the year...
