Hello,

I've got a development site version of my clients site that I'm now upgrading before I give it back in its upgraded state.

Part of the upgrade is SimplePress from version 5.1.4 to 5.5. However I've got an error that I can't get around now.

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 24 bytes) in /public_html/BCMEforum/wp-includes/functions.php on line 4148

I've tried re-installing manually both the SimplePress Plugin and also reinstalling the base wordpress wp-admin and wp-includes folder which has not fixed the issue. I also deactivated all the plugins except for simplepress hoping that may correct the issue but no, I still get the error above.

Have you seen anything like this and if so, what did you do to fix it?

Thanks,
Cathie.

This error does not stop the rest of the wordpress installation from working .. just the Admin back end of the forums section.

Okay, I've made a re-install from a backup and I've spotted the exact point the error occured. When i did the upgrade, the files were upgraded manually but the wp-admin/update-core.php page listed SimplePress still to upgrade .. which meant the database needed updating.

So I updated clicked the updated simplepress database and then I get the error again:

Fatal error: Allowed memory size of 134217728 bytes exhausted (tried to allocate 80 bytes) in /public_html/bcmesp/wp-includes/functions.php on line 4148

Still can't figure out how to fix this issue :(

how much php memory have you allocated?   can you temporarily allocate more to allow the upgrades to run?

to be clear, you are upgrading from 5.1.4?  thats a long, long ways back and much upgrading to be done...

another possibility would be to take the upgrades a step at a time... in other words, upgrade to 5.2, then to 5.3, then to 5.4 and finally to 5.5...

you can find previous versions of SP here:  http://codex.simple-press.com/.....-versions/

Hi this worked all the way from version 5.1.4 to version 5.4 in .1 increments. However when I downloaded the latest version from here https://simple-press.com/download/ which is version5.5 I get the error.

So - do you have a lot of plugins active - that's WordPress plugins not SP plugins? I mean you are running, according to that error, with 128MB of php memory and that is more than enough for Simple:Press and WordPress unless there are a large number of plugins - or some other 'big' plugins also active.

And if that is the case then setting your php memory limit higher is probably still going to be the best  and long term answer.

I do have a lot of plugins running but at the time of doing the upgrades they were all disabled, so they were not pulling on resources.

However I've managed to upgrade SimplePress to version 5.3 and that will do for now. I have no idea why the forum started to corrupt when upgraded to 5.4 or 5.5. For now it fortunately didn't stop me from being able to deliver a working website back to my client .. just that I couldn't upgrade them to the newest versions.

Thanks

Cathie.

okay, please be aware that if you are on latest wp version, you may run into issues... wp 3.9 in particular had some stuff that would require sp updating...
