interesting idea -- I thought that was installed, but looking today, it's not. The admin may have uninstalled it. Of note is that our technical admin was able to update SP itself, whereas we were not. May have been a matter of server or disk rights - perhaps he has more rights to the disk space than we do.
so, yeah, wp still has issues with this... its not an issue with direct mode per se as that is how most upgrades are done... Dietmar, did you try the thread in wordpress.org where folks were able to resolve it with server settings?

Do you mean this one? Did not know this thread before.
The discussed short falls of WP in this thread are cured by this plugin and the pre-requisites like libssh2 are all installed on my server. I work with this plugin on four WP installations - three of them multisite - and it works without any problems.
Sorry, I did not try the upgrade a second time after failure because there were a couple of people waiting for the back-to-live site. So i went the slow but safe path of manual upgrade.

No, I meant the link to wordpress.org support thread on the first page of this topic..
the issue, some folks claimed, was related to the amount of server storage available for uploads and extraction... simple press is larger than wp itself or most plugins...
