jump from where?

the unread post list on the group view page does this... plus the quicklinks unread post dropdown in SP head area does this...

ill set the stage for you.

lets say user X logs on.. read through a thread ... logs off.. then come back the next day sees that thread has grown..  instead of him trying to remember where he left off.. having a small icon or something of that nature.. he can click that will take him right to the last post he read in that thread.. the day before..

jump to last read post may be better.. conversely.   first unread post is saying pretty much the same thing..

No, nothing like that... that would be a huge impact on server performance... think of all the data that would need to be stored for every topic in the forum...  the database would get huge and the forum would drag performance wise...

as mentioned, we due store a list of newly updated topics for the user since last visit with the multiple methods of accessing that I mentioned... just not the location of new posts within that topic... we just take you to the last one...

Well that's not totally true.

If you login and open the unread posts list popup then there is a 'new' button beside any topics that have new posts SINCE YOUR LAST VISIT and that new button will take you to the first unread post - again - since you last logged off or were timed out. What it WONT do is take you to the first new post that was made but remained unread during previous visits. So that is actually pretty close to what you are asking for.

maybe i am not explaining.. it. right.. cause most of the forums in our area of interest have a feature like this..

It seems to me the fact that when a user logs in and the topic icon is a different color.. somehow something knows that new post have been made to that topic.. because the icon is a different color..

seems that if something is keeping track of where that user read to last.. and decided the next time he or she logs in.. if it needs to change the icon color.. could be the same thing i am looking for..

If it knows that there are new posts.. it changes the icon color.. so.. it has to have some way of keeping track of what the last post viewed was.. so in my mind.. we should be able to also have a small icon .. that allows the user to not only see the there is a new post.. for him but take him to that spot.. ..

do i have it all wrong in my head?

i did read your post.. it actually was published when i was in the process of writing mine.. so please dont assume i overlooked what you had to say.

in regard to your post. i can appreciate, now there is something similar.. however what i am beginning to see.. is that it will need to be coded into the form i wish it to be.

It just seems more user friendly to have this visual Que right on the thread itself.. so the user is able to simply see there is a new post.. then decide without having to scroll up .. that he or she would like to quickly navigate to that post.
