we have a multiplatform gaming community and Id like members (especially new ones) to have to choice a usergroup based on what platform they play on..ie playstation.  Is there a way to do this?  As of now we just ask members to do it themselves but not many follow.

Id like to have this so we can pm everyone in those usergroups once in awhile...for example pming the xbox1 members to let them know we have a scrim.  Those members who do not join a usergroup will be left out.\

Thanks for your help.  I have been trying to sort this issue our for some time.

I don't have much experience with WishList Member, but I'm pretty sure you can directly link users from registration pages to SP usergroups.

You could then for example have a register button which takes you to a page with choices - i.e - 'Register as Xbox One User', 'Register as PS4 User', 'Register as Xbox 360 User', which while the registration process can be the same, will put them in to whichever usergroup you have specified for each register link.

This might not be the best way to do it.. There might be a different / better way with WishList Member, but as I said I don't have much experience with using it. Will have to wait for Mr Papa to take a look as he might have a better suggestion, but it's definitely worth looking at.

Hang in... does the site use WishList member..? I am not sure...

But - if you go to the user group section of the admin and edit an existing group or create a new one you will see there the option to allow your members to self-enroll. This is something you have to enable and they can then chose to join whatever user group(s) that have this capability in their profile form.

You can already send PM's to all members of a user group available on the compose screen of PMs.

i know but many users dont join usergroups...the way I have it is that once u join your a junior member (usergroup) with only access to one forum.  Once they post again they are a member(usergroup) and have access to all forums but Id also like everyone to join the usergroup that correlated to the gaming platform they play on...ie xbox

I do not have wishlist

I don't know of any way of forcing people to join a usergroup from a list of choices unfortunately, only voluntary. The way you have it set up is as close as you can achieve with SP as far as I am aware, although maybe someone can just confirm that for us?

However, the concept of groups / roles is WordPress, so I think you'll find that most membership plugins for WP should allow you some control over newly registered users in a similar way to the method I suggest using WishList - As long as these plugins conform to the WP API.

And it seems as though there are a few decent looking free membership plugins out there in the WP Plugin Directory. Might just be worth reading up on a few, maybe trying them out to see if you can get it set up the way you want.

There is no real way to force users to join a usergroup...  But you can make any usergroup you want available for users to manually join...  see forum - usergroups - manage usergroups and edit any usergroup and enable the option for users to be able to join...  then in their profile, they can join any usergroup they choose...  and leave too...

but if they choose, they do not have to belong to any usergroups, unless you force them into one and disable the join feature... but you can pseudo do it by not giving them any access to view forums unless they join a usergroup which gives them some permissions...
