Forum 5.5.11 conflicts with WP 4.3, preventing registration emails from sending

Hey guys,

I'm on WPEngine and after literally weeks of wrangling with them back and forth, I find out that SimplePress is causing all of my registration emails to fail to be delivered.

I found this out by disabling SP on my staging site and registering a new account.  Only then does the email show up.

Before you write this off as a "he doesn't know how to configure email" complaint, let me walk you through everything we did for this:

  1. Tested with simple email accounts on various ESPs to register (Gmail, Yahoo, custom domain, didn't matter)--all failed uniformly
  2. The failure is not symmetrical--I register as foo@gmail.com on my site.com website.  I receive the "new user" email on webmaster@site.com, but I don't get ANYTHING from foo@gmail.com, ever.  Both accounts are working and can send/receive email outside of WP.
  3. After talking with my host, they suggested adding an SMTP plugin for WordPress to improve deliverability
  4. Tested and confirmed that the plugin was able to send test emails via SMTP on Google Apps, so we knew it was possible.
  5. Independently verified that other email clients are able to send and receive emails on the same account
  6. With SP enabled, no email ever appeared for the registering user.
  7. Ran a plugin conflict test on my staging server--only when SP is disabled will I receive those emails as the new user on my site

This is on WP 4.3.1 which has some new flaky changes to PHP Mailer (see here for all the SMTP plugins that are now screwed thanks to the library upgrade: https://wordpress.org/support/.....st-7613727 ).  It's possible these are impacting SimplePress as well.

I would be more than happy to provide you access to that staging site to demonstrate the issue, as it's a BIG deal for me--users haven't been able to receive credentials to the forum or site in weeks.

Belive we identified the cause of this for a few users (wp broke backwards compat)...

Have a change in place and wil be in next version coming first week of December.... It may require a change as well that wp made in upcoming 4.4 (or might be 4.3.1 which part of the problem)...

Unfortunately, just getting on plane so can't do much right now...

Also - just go to the forum admin > options > email settings - and turn off the option to use the SP new user email. That will revert to using the built in WP one.
