I might have stumbled upon a temporary fix and a good place to start looking for the issue...
I was just adding some online flash games to the site the forum is embedded in and previously uploaded some images to click on to link through to the pages containing the games. These images I named crossword.jpg. quiz.jpg and sudoku.jpg
I then set up the pages with containing the games and titled them crossword, quiz and sudoku and that set up the permalinks silverhairs.com/crossword etc... Upon viewing the page all that was on the page was the image crossword.jpg much same as the forum page when it disappeared leaving just the image named the same as the permalink.
I deleted all the images and the pages popped up with the games on them!
I will now delete the forum image and set about looking at what plugins were updated around the time the forum disappeared my money is on my breadcrumbs plugin.
I will let you know how I get on...
progress... but you have numerous javascript errors on your site...
they seem to be coming from your wp theme... can you try a quick switch to the default wp theme and check again? just trying to verify its the theme...
tabs.js in the theme and something called sharebar...
but could be something else too... would be worth going to forum - integration - page and permalink and try loading the forum js in the footer... and on forum - toolbox - housekeeping, try clearing the combined js cache...

Thanks for your help guys, it appears share bar is conflicting with the forum. I would guess it is a javascript conflict, I will report back a fix if and when I find one.
The tabs.js object issue has been there for some time and I have just been to lazy to look at it! Fortunately it isn't causing any real issues.
Have a good weekend.
The script confict is probably related to http://codex.simple-press.com/.....-conflict/ - at least that is the most common issue and an easy and quick one to check for.
I would appreciate some confirmation here as I think I really need to try and get to the bottom of this.
You seem to be saying that creating a WP post attachment with the same file name as the slug of a regular post is the cause of the problem. Or is that too simplistic... or have I misunderstood?

Strange as it may seem, that's exactly what i am saying - the original issue arose because there was an image named 'forum' and this was the same as the slug name 'forum' for the page containing the forum.
However the image named 'forum' had been in my media library since I first started building the website and had not caused any issues. Either an update to wp, the theme or one of the plugins or adding another plugin has caused the issue.
I do not have the time to test for the offender at present but will start to check dates over the next couple of days and report back as to what my actions were that caused the conflict.
