I noticed that new forum members are set up as wordpress subsribers. Is that correct and does that mean that they will now receive new post notification emails that "normal" blog subscribers get?

there are no such thing as forum users... everyone is a wp user... as plugin for WP, we just sit on top of WP... so yeah, users will get whatever wp role you have set up for new users...

not sure what you mean by notification emails... by default, wp does not send any of these.... if you have another plugin that does such, yes, user will likely get them...
