I noticed each forum has a field:

Special forum message to be displayed above forums:
 
While I can add text, even HTML to it, once I save my entry the content is cleared. I have no way of later editing it even though the formatted text is rendered on the forum, visible to members.
 
Also just below the Special Forum section is one titled, "Extended Forum Options" but without any options. Is there a reason this section exist with no options?

That is something they just found out about and have created a fix for it. It will be included in the next update.

The Extended forum options would contain any special options that a SP plugin might add. If you don't have any it just means you don't have any plugins that add special options.
