I've noticed that the Forum view is not shouting the correct number of "Views"  I suspect it has to do with the W3 Total Cache Plugin which I use.   I can exclude the forum from getting "cached" which should enable the views counter to work correctly but that will cause the forum from getting cached and cause performance issues.

Is there anything I can do to keep the forum cached and get the "views" count to work?

You can not successfully cache the forum page in this way. The views count is the least of the issues that will happen. You really do need to exclude the forum page fronm the cache and with Total Cache this is for all cache types.
SP does perform some caching of its own and is an area we continually try to improve upon,
