Forums running slow

It was fine earlier in the day and then all of a sudden, it's running very slow. The rest of the site is running normally, but the forums are taking more than 20 seconds to load. I don't have any caching installed (that I'm aware of) or anything weird that I'm aware of. The last plug-in I installed on the forums was the pupload one. I just disabled it to see if that was the case, and the forums are still slow.

So if there are some things I need to install to increase the speed on the forums, please let me know. Again, it was just fine earlier today and prior to this day and all of a sudden it's taken a long time and ONLY on the forums.

They are located here: http://berserk-games.com/forum

A few things: I do not have every single SP plug-in installed, but I do have 26 of them installed and these are important ones that I definitely do use.

I have only a few WP plug-ins and removed any that I do not use for sure. I was looking into a caching plug-in and when I tried to upload one I got this message:

Could this have any bearing on what is occurring right now? I read somewhere that re-uploading the update.php could help, but I wanted to hear your opinions first. But not sure why it's affecting the forums and no other part of the site.

Any other info you need, please let me know.

Thanks.

Did you add some kind of Google analytics script to the WP Forum page? I am seeing a script error where normally there is page content.

I just edited my post with more info.

Where are you seeing a script error?

I did add Google analytics script to various pages on my site, but not the forum page. Actually I did, I didn't see it as it was in visual instead of text mode. I have removed it just now.

I temporarily deactivated the forums, because I noticed our ram usage on our server shot way up to almost the max. It has since gone down.

Is there anything associated with the forums that would cause the ram usage to spike up so much and what I can do to leviate it? Otherwise, I may have to find something else in the meantime :/

Thanks.

About the only thing would be if you are showing an inordinate amount of forums, topics or posts on a page...  the defaults for topics and posts are quite small, but on group view, how many forums do you have?

I don't have very many forums. 3 groups and 8 forums total. And max topics and post view is 25 each.

Right, no issue with number of forums... the 25 topics and posts are more than we use for the default, but still not excessive... certainly any capable server should handle... try a few less and see if any difference - I doubt it (I run bigger than that on one site)...

what kind of avatars are you allowing? gravatars? are you using the gravatar caching plugin?

I thought the default was 30? That was the first time I lowered it to 25. I'll try lowering it to 20 and see.

Gravatars are low on the list, I prefer people to upload their own. And no, not using a gravatar caching plugin.

[EDIT]

For right now it seems to have leveled off. Not sure what happened, but the error I had with Wordpress in one of my earlier posts is not longer happening either, so I don't know if that was related or not. So for now,I'll keep an eye on it and see what happens.

not sure memory related, but every gravatar has to communicate with an external server... our gravatar cache plugin locally caches theme and saves the http requests...

our default topics per page is 12... our default posts per page is 20... but really, should not be a huge difference unless the server is resource limited (ie shared hosting)...

please let us know how it goes...

Sure thing. Everything was fine. I disabled stuff and slowly added things one by one and found the culprit to the forums slowing down. It was the File Uploader with Plupload SP Plugin. After about 10-15 minutes of reactivating it, the forums started slowing down and our ram usage went WAY up.

So just something to look into I suppose. No idea why it would do that, or if it's conflicting with something else, but it was really strange and scary!

Thanks!
