I am already using the template tags plugin, and it works great at showing recent forum posts, but how do I get the Hot Topics to show like you have on this site? I found the short codes, I'm just not smart enough to figure out how to get it in a widget. :/

It does not work if I use it in just a text widget. So I'm not sure what type of widget to put the short code in?

you need a text widget that allows php code... shortcodes wont help either as they are designed for post content... you would need php too in order to fire a shortcode in the sidebar...
I would suggest the exec-php plugin for WP... but there any many of them out there...
