Is there a setting i can turn off so newest members don't show at the bottom of forum ?

No. Changes like this are performed by editing the display template. Do you want to have details on this easy edit?

open up the spFoot.php template file in your sp theme... and find the template tag that outputs the newest members...  just comment out or remove...  it should be quite obvious which function it is, but come back if you cannot find it...
