Hi Guys, i know to many of you this might sound like a crazy question, but i guess that there are many of us like myself that straggle just a bit with applying new language.

What im trying to achieve is keeping my Wordpress Admin in English but applying German Language to my Simple:Press forum front end (my default theme).

Steps i have taken:

1. I have downloaded the spDefault-de.po
2. I have uploaded it to the sp-resources/forum-language/sp-themes
3. I have changed in my WP-config.php the naguage ot show: de_DE

However the only thing that happened is that my Wordpress Admin has switched to German.

Would very much appreciate if anyone can share some light on what am i doing wrong here.

thanks,

Daniel.

  1. Change your wp-config.php language setting back to the way it was. I assume this gives you what you want for the rest of your site - i.e., English admin/German front end.
  2. It is the 'mo' files you need NOT the 'po' files. So download the 'mo' files for both the forum core (sp) and your SP theme (spDefault). Remember that SP plugins also have their own translations if you are using any.
  3. Copy those mo files to their correct SP languages folder.
  4. Check the file names of the SP mo files against your setting for WP_LANG in your wp-config.php. Ensure they are the same. For example - if your WP_LANG setting is 'de' then your SP theme mo file should be named 'spDefault-de.mo'. If your WP_LANG setting is 'de_DE' then the theme mo file should be called spDefault-de_DE.mo'.
  5. Check the file names and correct if necessary for all the downloaded SP mo files in use and you should be good.

Thanks!

I have followed the process and it seems to work and show the German Language now.

However, if i change my wp-config.php file (so my Admin will show in English i.e. define('WPLANG', '');) the front end stop showing German.

Thoughts?

That is because if you leave the language code empty it will default to English. Leaving it empty is the same as using 'en' and English is the language WP is written in.

Your problem is that unlike SP, WordPress does not have separate language files for the front and back ends. I believe that is something they are planning to start doing but have not made available yet.

You can't have your WordPress like that at the moment. But you can have your Simple:Press like that. As I say, I believe the WordPress development team are about to change this soon.

actually, now that WP 3.4 has been released, they have broken it up...  you can get the front end and/or administration...
