I reverted to a single site and it looks like all went well with exporting the sub blog to the main site before reverting.
At first the forum came up empty, but that was fixed once I ACTIVATED the plugin (had to activate all plugins).
Did a test registration and I got the math question, so that works now.
But it is strange that now new users get only ONE email after registering. Is that how it's supposed to be? In multisite I got an email with the password, and then after logging in, got a second email with the (incorrect) link.
So is a new user only supposed to get one email?

yes, correct... one email... just telling you your account details... by default in standard wp, registrations are not approved or anything... so just the one...
there are plugins out there for wp that all you to moderate and approve registrations if you prefer...

Ok, so that 2nd mail was sent by WP and ONLY in multisite.
And just in case anyone has a similar problem with multisite, I installed the forum in the main site and don't even know if it's possibly to have it in a sub blog, but if so, it would have been much more difficult or maybe impossible to move the forum because WP only exports pages, posts, etc.
