sorted this out,

went to WP Dashboard>>All Pages>>Selected SP Forum

Upper right corner, dropdown Screen Options

Discussion was already not selected but the comments/discussion was still visible, selected Discussion and two options boxes appeared at the bottom of the page and one of them was "Allow Comments"....which was checked!  

So even though the Discussions box wasn't checked, Allow Comments was checked and comments were enabled!  unchecked Allow Comments, updated the page and the comments at the bottom of all SP forums pages are gone.

It was definitely a WP Page issue from the beginning as the comments were the same at the bottom of every SP forum page.
