How can I suppress/remove the "Newest Members" area?   I'd like to at least be able to have it only show Approved newest members, in case people try to spam that with URLs or bad words.

thanks!

most display elements are controlled by your sp theme...  so edit the theme (make sure its your own so you dont lose updates) and remove the template function that displays it...  in this case, its in the spFoot.php template file...

thanks, will do.  in checking it looks like that file is embedded in a resources.zip, correct?  would be nice if it was just in a subdirectory so easy to mod, w/o rezipping

No. no. It is in the SP theme folder that you are using. Theme location is shown on the themes admin panel or in the integration > storage locations. Look in the /templates folder of your SP theme...

Nooooo... dont touch the zip file...

Its where your themes are located... by default its wp-content/sp-resources/forum-themes/theme where theme is the theme you are using...
