In my first and new setup of SP, ive got multiple parent categories and child cats.
Right now, its showing a set of buttons for posting to the parent or child cats. How do I remove the button or restrict ability to post in parent cats?
I thought of maybe setting permissions so no posting was available, but would that also make the same permissions for the child cat's within?

By categories I assume you mean forums and sub-forums.
Every forum and sub-forum can be controlled individually by the user group/permission relationship set on the forum record. So it would be a matter of setting a permission set on the parent forum that will disallow posting while using a permission set for the sub-forums that do allow it.
Is that what you meant?

Exactly on the nose.
I had tried it earlier, but when I restricted the parent forum permission's it automatically carried over to the child forums as well.
Now that ive stepped away for a couple of hours, ill give it a go again and see how it goes.

Must have been a temporary brain fart. All is good now.
I actually just created a new set of permissions, and assigned those to the parent forums. This way, I can still use that section for forum wide announcements and such as needed.
But I dont think visitors can post to the parent forums now, which is perfect.
