How to simplify forum registration

I have quite a few forum users who enter wrong forum credentials too many times and they get locked out of the forum temporarily by my security settings. Many users have a hard time figuring out the registration process. They reset their passwords several times before they get it to work

I am wondering if there is a way to simplify the registration process. Right now they register, then they fill in their information. When they submit it they end up at a wordpress login screen, then they have to go to their email and click on a link, then they are sent to a page where they are prompted to reset their password. That brings them to a page where they are automatically assigned a long password which nobody can remember. Then after they reset it, they end up at a wordpress screen where they are prompted to log in. Then, when they click on the login link, they end up on a wordpress page and are totally confused where they ended up.

I don't know if there is a problem with my registration settings or if this is supposed to be like that. However I am looking for a way to make the registration process really simple and easy, kind of idiot proof. Is there a way to do this?

We really are going to have to write an FAQ on this one...!

So  first thing. Simple:Press is but a humble plugin of WordPress and Wordpress controls your website along with everything to do with user registration, login and logout.  Apart from offering a login form, Simple:Press has nothing to do with this process.

And secondly yes - I believe this is the model WordPress now imposes. I would suggest that if you want to change it then the best thing to do would be to search the WP plugin repository for registration/login plugins to see what they offer and how they override the core WP methodology. There are several around, some of which have been around for some years now but I am sorry to say I am not in a position to recommend one currently.

When you say that you are not in the position to recommend one, do you mean that you don't know enough about them, or do you mean that there aren't any good ones around that work well?

It means that it has been a very, very long time since I investigated any and certainly have not done so since WordPress changed their password procedures.

Ok, get it, and thanks for the suggestion. It seems to me that wordpress has a rather cumbersome and not very user-friendly system in regards to registration. Sigh!

a lot of it has to do with security of passing the password around in plaintext...  and agree, has made it more difficult and have seen more than a couple users struggling with how to get to end state...
