How to upgrade from 4.5.1 to v5 without breaking my site.

I'm scared.

Last time I tried to upgrade to v5 I got all sorts of errors and glitches.

- Fatal errors in simplepress admin

- empty pages in forums

- more

- and more

Of course, I can make a database backup, and I will.

But I did it in the past and I had to go back, re-uploading the old database.

What went wrong? And why? I don't know.

Actually I  subscribed this membership because I need a personal help upgrading without damaging my site, and without having to go back again, hopefully.

I will give an account with admin permissions, if one of the admins here at simple-press.com support is available to do the upgrade for me.

Thank you

we cannot really do the upgrade for you, but we can walk  you through... we do have a someone (BrandonC) who does do custom work that we can put you in touch with if you want to hire him...

in the meantime, lets walk through the upgrade...

questions... what version of sp are you currently on?  what version of wp are you currently on?

with that info, we can get you going...

Thank you Mr Papa!

I prefer a walkthrough, so I can also help (indirectly) the community.

I will do a simple screencast while following your instructions.

  1. Current SP versions: 4.5.1
  2. Current WP Version: 3.4.2

I am not sure what Steve had in mind here although he will be along later... but the codex instructions are, I think, pretty clear and it would be worth your while just reading through them here: http://codex.simple-press.com/.....rsion-4-5/ - just skip down to the 'How to Upgrade' section and that is a step by step walk-through... happy to expand on any of those steps if needed of course.

argh, lol... missed the version in the topic title...  yes, as Andy says, just follow that article in the codex...  make sure to make a db backup first...

My upgrade of SP and the SP DB went fine.

However, it failed on the plugin update:

Updating Plugin Editor TinyMCE Rich Text (3/13)

Editor TinyMCE Rich Text updated successfully.

Downloading update from https://simple-press.com/downl.....wpupdate=1

Unpacking the update...

Installing the latest version…

Removing the old version of the plugin...

Plugin updated successfully

Fatal error: Call to undefined function sp_tinymce_do_upgrade() in /problem-with-post-edit-buttonome/paddler/public_html/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-plugins/tinymce-richtext/sp-tinymce-plugin.php on line 88

Should I panic?

I believe this will be a case of upgrading many plugins at once... and it fixes itself when you are done...

the location of that function moved in the tinymce update...  and it tried to run the upgrade before the new file was there...  and it ran later when it was...

Not sure if it did or not. I did a uninsall and a reinstall of TinyMCE Rich Text and it is working now.

Offtopic - I am curious how you make the Simplepress TinyMCE toolbar (see above) so pretty on your own forum (see above). Is it custom MCE? custom buttons?

You have not explored enough... ;)

Forum - components - tinymce

On that admin panel, you can now (since 5.2 and tinymce 2.0) select from multiple skins. This one is cirkuit.
