as to no subscribe to forum button, Andy may not remember, but we discussed it during development... 
the choice at that time was to not clutter up the display with another button... there are quite a few already... and wait and see if anyone requested or wanted such a button... in the many months since its release, you are the first to ask!
but we can certainly consider adding one... but to be complete, would need to be on group view, forum view and topic view... hence the potential clutter...

By 'update' I just meant an update to the forum subscriptions profile panel...

sorry for delay but I did not notice your question.
Actually no, there's no message and no error at all, not even a js error.
But I've made some work on a mirror site trying to reproduce the error, and I spoke about it in this post:

On the mirror site I fixed errors removing single quotes from subscriptions translation files (I'm using italia localization)
unfortunately using the "fixed" translations in the main website did not fix this problem

you probably want to housekeeping revert the profile panels first... then fix the translation... once its broker, its broke in the db...
