I just setup a new forums and am testing it.  I can make new topics and posts, subscribe to them as well I have the Admin setting such that I should get a notification by email whenever this happens - yet nothing has been sent to me.

Maybe there's a setup I am missing?  Any help would be appreciated.

is this shared hosting? wp can have problems with email on shared hosting unless you created a wordpress@yourdomain.com email address... wp sends all the emails for this, not SP...

best work around is to install an smtp plugin such as HGK SMTP Plugin for WP...

Thanks for answering on a Saturday!  When you say "shared hosting" I am not totally sure what you mean.  It is our own server living on a server farm - but we don't share it with anyone.  I can try the plugin you suggested - not sure how to set it up - the website now sends emails out, through our existing Vanilla forums and Wordpress.

I'll try the plugin you suggest and see what happens.

One thing I neglected to mention, this is on a Multi User WP site and forum is it's own virtual WP install.  I never set anything up in this WP install.  Maybe that's the deal?  Not sure how to but .....

I installed WP-mail-smtp plugin, configured it and successfully sent a test message from the server.  I then tried posting again on the forum with no email reply.

Any clues what I may be doing incorrectly?  Is there a setup in Simple Press?

are you posting yourself to a subscribed topic?? you wont get an email... you already know about it... post with a test user to see if you get an email...

Thanks.  I was doing that so I logged in as a test from a different user account and still no dice.

I surer appreciate the help.  Let me know what's next.  if it's setup related, let me know where to look or I can email you privately a set of credentials you can use if that helps.

Well settings first. Emails are sent TO the users address as set in their WP Profile so first task is to make sure that is correct.

The sent FROM details are (optionally) held in the forum admin > options > Email Settings panel where you can set the components of the from address - so check those are correct as well. if you do not use these options then WP will send them as 'WordPress@your_domain'.

All emails are sent by the WordPress email routines NOT directly by Simple:Press. The WP forums are filled with email problem reports! As Steve said above - we usually recommend the HGK SMTP plugin which we also use on this site and it most often will solve our users email issues successfully.

Thanks for answering so late in the evening!

I checked the setting as you suggested and they are fine.  The SMTP program I installed worked great for everything but the forum.  🙂

I deactivated the program and installed the HGK SMTP plugin but have no idea how to set it up or what my SMTP server is.  I have contacted our administrator for some help setting it up.  I'll let you know if we get it going.

its pretty simple to set up...  at least from default perspective... your setup could be different...

smtp server address is localhost

uncheck ssl

smtp server is 25

leave smtp username and password blank...

give that a shot...
