Image display problem - images stacking up & can't be closed

Hello - I've suddenly developed a problem with displaying images attached to a forum post.  I'm pretty sure I did not have this problem before the last SP update, and have not had other plugin/theme updates since SP was just updated.  However, I'm not sure if the problem correlates with this update. I am using the reboot SP theme.

A member posts multiple images to a forum post. Upon clicking on one of them to open it up and show it larger, it opens, but the image can't be closed; if you click another thumbnail in the post, it opens up on top of the first one.  The image also seems to float behind the primary navigation in the theme.

The WP theme hasn't been updated recently, and I've never noticed an image problem like this, so I am wondering if it relates to this latest update.

I am traveling and can't seem to get a good screenshot on the chromebook I am using; the problem appears on Chromebook, Mac, and in Chrome, Firefox and Safari.

A membership is required to access the site; I  can provide access if this is something you want to look at first hand.  I'll try to post a screenshot as soon as I can but wanted to go ahead and begin asking for assistance since it is a fairly big problem, making use of the forum almost impossible once you click on an image.  The forum is somewhat image-oriented so I really need to resolve it.

couple things here..  fundamentally nothing changed in latest version...  one thing I want to look into is the multiple images open... I cannot remember if that is a change or not - but it shouldnt matter anyways...

the appearing behind theme navigation will more than likely be a conflict with your wp theme...  would need to see this in action, but we can probably give you some css to handle - but on our end, nothing here changed...

as to the closing, sounds like a js conflict of sorts... I am unable to replicate this as images close just fine - even with multiple open...  so would need to see in action...

Thanks for the quick feedback!

I've tested a number of things and not been able to resolve the issue; here's a few quick details:

- It is not confined to multiple image posts; some single image posts exhibit the problem

- I have changed my theme to twenty-sixteen, and deactivated all plugins except SP - the problem still exists

- I have no caching plugin or host-level caching

- I've tried switching to the barebones SP theme and it has no effect

- Several older images work fine, that is, when you click on  them to expand, there is an X on each image that lets you close it.

- It seems like large images that might natively be larger than the display area of the screen trigger the problem.  I'm not sure of this, but it seems it may correlate.

I'm going to try to figure out an JS conflicts but with no other plugins, barebones SP theme, and twenty-sixteen theme I'm not sure if there could be much of a JS conflict that wouldn't affect a large number of SP users.

Thanks,

Kelly

thanks for the additional info...

you say the problem still exists.. which one?  original post alluded to multiple things... the z-index issue (behind navigation)?  or cant close? or other?

we try to constrain all image sizes to fit within the available real estate.. if that is not happening, still indicates perhaps a conflict - or perhaps in this case, we cannot determine??  but still ideally would see what it actually looks like (ie via link not image)...

Ok, let me summarize the problem, updating it with new analysis:

Any image in a forum post, if large enough, will become unclosable once zoomed to a larger size.  It doesn't matter whether there is one or multiple images in the post. The problem is that the X in the upper right corner can't be accessed.

When the problem occurs, if you scroll your entire screen back up to the top, you'll see that the image interacts strangely with the WP menus.

The problem occurs even if I switch to the SP barebones theme, and I can deactivate ALL other WP plugins, and switch to the twenty-sixteen theme and the problem still occurs.

I've got a separate test site running all of the exact plugins, code etc - I can duplicate the problem on the test site.

I am sending you login credentials and a link to a forum test post where I have uploaded dummy images of varying sizes.  Click on the smaller images, and there is no problem. Click on the larber images (1024w and larger) and the problem is obvious.

Thanks for your help on this!

thanks for the details...  its still something on your site, I believe, and not new...  but we can help work through it... likely a z-index issue with the layering...

remember, you can always close one of those popups with the escape button too...

and its likely a js thing too with the image size because we scale them to fit in the available display area...  I have not been able to get one larger to pop up...

but we can take a look...

It's possible it's not new, and we have not uploaded larger images that revealed the issue; I'm just not sure.

I'm not sure I understand how it could be a JS conflict if I am using twenty-sixteen, and disable all plugins except Simplepress.  So with no 3rd party theme in use, no plugins other than SP, and even trying the SP Barebones theme instead of Reboot, the problem still occurs,

Incidentally, I started with the setting to make uploaded images thumbnails.  After user feedback I've decided I don't want thumbnails; instead I want images to fill the width of the forum posting, or if smaller than the width that would be in the size uploaded.  I'm going to play with the image settings in SP to see if I can get it to do that; it might happen to be a bit of a workaround since users won't need to click on images if they are initially displayed larger.

Thanks for all your help with this!

I see from the above that you have sent login credentials (and I assume a URL to a specimen post) to @mr-papa so i am sure he will take a look shortly.

I am not really familiar with the WP default 'sixteen' theme. sixteen - like all WP default themes never define a wide enough column to really make a forum work. Their idea of full page never is! The same is happening with next years model that I tested just yesterday. Sad really.

However, I am unsure about sixteen but they have, in the past, made use of some jQuery UI code which if anything can cause a conflict. And as Mr Papa has said, if the popup is just hiding behind the banner or menu then it is just going to be a simple CSS z-index issue.

Yes - I sent a PM with credentials and a link to a specific post where I uploaded dummy images of various sizes.

I will test with a variety of other simple themes, trying to ensure a wide enough page for the forum. Do you have any suggested or "reference" themes that you know play nice with SP and have no known issues with SP or JS?  It might be helpful if I test with them. Also I can buy any premium theme if necessary that you think would help in the testing process.

Thanks,

Kelly

shouldnt be an issue with 2016, we have tested with it before...  in future, best to always email both  myself and yellow swordfish since we are many hours apart and can usually handle things across the day...

what are you file uploads settings on forum - options - content settings? do you have the option to constrain popup turned on?

will look at the z-index issue now...
