In the /importers folder of the importer plugin you wil find the phpbb.php control script.
Go down to the SFFORUMS table mapping block and change the 2 instances of 'WHERE parent_id != 0' to 'WHERE parent_id = 0'.
I honestly have no idea whether this will actually solve it but it is worth a try. If the phpBB folk have made a structural change in this version then I may need to write a separate script for it.

OK, I did what you asked...re-ran the importer and it seems to be getting farther now! The import yields:
User/Member Data Created for Members 19001 - 19100
Forum Group Forum Group Created
Forum Created: FAQ (Topics: 22 Posts: 46)
Forum Created: Support Questions (Topics: 3319 Posts: 17163)
Forum Created: General Discussion (Topics: 254 Posts: 825)
