Okay, I just deleted the WordPress installation, reinstalled it, reinstalled Simple:Press and ran the importer.  Exact same result.  I never showed you before, all the things that did install.  It is able to import all the users, the forums, and it does one post (this has been going on all along).  I probably should have mentioned that.  I mean, it's able to access the database for a good while, and then it up and quits.  Here's what goes on before it hangs:

this is quite weird... sure you are tired of us saying that... ;)

can you check your php error log when you did this? any chance you see
a mysql server gone away error? its almost like the mysql server is
dying in mid process execution and then that error is related to it
starting back up... just a shot in the dark, really...

How do I check the php error log?  Don't know where that would be.  I'll ask my host, too.  Another clue might be that it does import one post -- a post that was in a thread that was not visible to the public.  Could the import be hitting a spot in the database that's doing some security thing that kicks it out?  What if I went into vBulletin and either deleted that stuff, or made it public?

Post #32. Yes - I do wish you had mentioned this at the start! I had no idea it was actually making some progress.

I can not explain the use of 'root' as a user name in the error message but it does look like the error is triggered by a sql problem which is probably going to be caused by something like a bad column name or something like that. I don't know what version of vBulletin the guy was using who wrote the importer but maybe this is a different one to that.

The only way I can realistically help is if you are willing to let me have a dump of the vBulletin database so that i can try an import here under test conditions to see if I can find the fault. If willing then I can assure you I have no interest in your data and the DB will be destroyed once any problem is dealt with one way or the other.

Your call.

Okay, that would make sense about the column issue.  I was just having trouble getting the vBulletin to work.  The site had been hacked and there was confusion for awhile trying to get the contentype table, I think it was, right.  How can I get the dump to you?  Would you like to see the thread regarding the vbulletin issues?

If I could get an email address, I could set it to have access to my Dropbox folder where that database file is.

OK - turns out Steve has a DropBox account so he grabbed it.

The first thing I notice is something in the 'forums' table. According to the importer script - and again you have to remember I have no experience of vBulletin - any forum with a 'parentid' value of -1 is is fact a forum group - not an actual forum. However, in your database ALL the forums have a parentid of -1 with the exception of one of them.

I do not know what this means but assume that you will...?

They're being jerks and won't answer that question.  I made the mistake of telling them I needed the information to help with an import.  They aren't going to help me leave.  One of the reasons I want to leave, they're such jerks.  I did get advice from them to re-upload all the forum files.  I am able to get into the admin now, and no errors are being thrown up so far.  I tried running the import again and it hung again,at the same spot.  Can we assume there's still an error in the database?

Thanks for all the help.
