did you ever try removing the sp-resources directory and recreating yourself? based on the discussion seems this should get the owner off of 99, no?
If you can get sp-resources created, we should be able to fill the lower directories very quickly... and see what happens...

can you elaborate on that? did the subdirs and files in theme get recreated too?

so what problems were created after doing this?

The theme didn't work. I got that fixed. Then I uploaded a few of the SP plugins to the proper directory, they successfully showed up in the plugin's list in SP, I activated them, the features showed up correctly in SP but when you tried to use the actual feature it gave some errors and I didn't write those down. I assumed it was because the initial SP install didn't do it's thing or there were still permission issues even though everything I created showed the owner and group correctly.
but the sp install still ran, right? either before or after...
If you wanted to go back to that condition, we could try to walk through it...

Yep, SP appeared to be running although I didn't go through and check everything. I have no doubt we could probably get everything running but my issue is how much I'd have to mess with every little thing I wanted to do in the future. I need it to be fire and forget just like WP and the other plugins have been for me.
What we need to find out is why SP is setting everything to 99 it creates when all the other plugins set permissions correctly.
would you be able to give us ftp access to your server? so we could debug the install process and see what is going on? would have to insert debug code into the simple press files... probably could limit ftp server access to the wp-content folder and lower... would also need credentials with wp and sp admin access...
