I recently tried to install Simple:Press by following the steps outlined in the installation instructions: I copied the Simple:Press folder into the /wp-content/plugins/ folder, then activated the plugin.
But when I go to the Forum menu, instead of "install" it says "perform upgrade" (with the header "Upgrade Simple:Press From Version 5.2 to 5.3.4 - (Build 9495 to Build 10781)"). After clicking on "perform upgrade", the following messages are displayed:
Upgrade is in progress - please wait [with a spinning icon]
Upgrade Aborted
current build: 9495
{"status":"success","type":"upgrade","section":9543,"response":"Build upgrade section 9543 executing. Status: success
","error":""}
Your help is appreciated - thanks!
so more than likely another plugin is interfering with ajax nature of the install and json responses... anything in the php error log?
also, with the browser console open, try the install again... this time note the ajax responses that come up and see if by expanding any of them, you can see what the xml/json responses are...

Steve is correct, of course, regarding the upgrade process and probable cause.
But you starred by saying you wanted to install it. The fact that it attempted an upgrade means that the previous version had already been installed at some point on the site and not properly removed. So the database tables were still in place. This would cause an upgrade operation to transpire.
