Support Forum
Hi,
I have a fairly new install of Simple Press, and only a few topics posted. Everything was working great until I updated my website to us SSL Encryption after the Forum was up and running, and now there is a problem with the Add Topic button and the Add Reply button.
Here is what I am seeing:
I am not really a coder, but have noticed a couple of odd things. I used Firefox's Inspector Tool to see what was going on. Here is what I am seeing with the links.
When I try to start a new topic within a forum, and hover my mouse over the button I get:
javascript:void(null)
But...
When I am in a specific topic and hover over the Add Topic button I get:
NewTopicButtonTop" class="spButton spRight" title="Start a new topic" href="https://carvingonwood.com/online-school-forum/carving-techniques/?new=topic"
However...
Clicking on the Add Topic button within a topic takes me back to the forum level, and I cannot add a topic.
Also, From within a topic I cannot add a reply to the topic due to the Add Reply button showing the same: javascript:void(null)
My forum is a private members only forum, and if you need to see it in action please let me know so I can create credentials for you.
Like I said, this is a fairly new forum, and if I need to un-install it and start over it would not be too much work. But, if there is a way to refresh or reinstall without loosing the forum that would be great.
Cheers,
Tim
Let's knock the 'null' thingy on the head straight away just so you know - https://simple-press.com/docum.....wser-link/
And start with a few questions...
What you have missed telling us in any detail - is what exactly happens when you try and make a reply or new topic. Also, having moved to https, do all the URL's on the forum internal links look correct? And, it would be useful to know exactly how you switched to SSL if this is the root of the problem. If you can answer these three questions we will get a better picture.
For reference, Simple:Press, being a WordPress plugin, relies on the WP core and framework to handle URLs. So if WP reports the site as being https then that is what should get used. However, because what are called 'rewrite rules' have to be compiled and stored in the database, it is necessary to make an update top the forum permalinks when such a switch takes place. If you have not done this then you should do so now. Follow these instructions:
- Go to the forum admin > Integration > Page and Permalink panel.
- Make sure the selected page at the top is correct - and it should need no change. If it does, select the right page and then use the Update WP Integration at the bottom of the panel.
- Regardless of whether you needed to change the page, finally, click on the 'Update Forum Permalink' button in the middle of the form. This will regenerate the necessary rewrite rules.
Actually- there is a fourth question! Were any other changes made at the same time as the switch to SSL - or when these problems began? Any new WordPress plugins for example? Or new WordPress theme?

Thanks Yellow Swardfish for the clarification on the 'null'. I figured it may be something along those lines, but not knowing java script I was unsure.
What happens when I click on the link? Nothing happens. There is no redirection, no page refresh, or anything.
Internal Links: They all look correct.
I switched the entire website over to SSL. Once the SSL was put in place I changed the WordPress Address and Site Address to the 'https' through the General Settings.
The switch to the SSL was the only initial change. At that time the links stopped working. No additional plugins or anything were added at that time.
I started researching this topic through the help forum, and found that a common statement was to ensure that the WordPress Theme was up to date. I updated my WordPress Theme to insure that I was totally current, and that I was not missing something there. There was no change once updated.
I did as you asked and Updated the Forum Permalink. This also has had no effect.
I found something interesting when I went to my Profile and looked under the Permissions Tab. It said that I only had permissions to 'View' to topics and not do anything else. I am the only Admin for the website and forum, and was wondering if this might have something to do with it.
I am contacting my members to ask them to attempt to post a topic or reply to a topic, so I can see how far this issue really goes. It may just be my permissions, but I cannot see where my Admin permissions have been effected.
I feel like I am missing something simple that would get things up and running, but I cannot seem to locate it. Thanks for your continued help. The Simple Press forum is a fantastic forum, and I know it will benefit my community.
Cheers,
Tim
That would be useful information but if you are seeing an 'add topic/reply' button then you have permission to use it. But yes - it should show up in the profile.
Go to the forum admin > toolbox > housekeeping and click on the reset user auths task and see if that resets your permissions display aa they should be set.
The one question you didn't answer was exactly how you converted to SSL. Did you do this the standard WP way with the config changes for example?

The steps I followed to convert to SSL was through the help of Hostgator (my service provider). I submitted my request, and they installed everything necessary. They notified me that everything was ready. I then went to my website dashboard to the Setting Tab - General, and set the WordPress Address and Site Address to the ‘https’ .
If there is more or less to do than that to convert to SSL through the "standard WP way" I do not know it.
Any clarification on this would be great.
Thanks for your continued help.
