Tracking the first unread post in any topic is a pretty tall order. What we can do is track the first unread post in any topic since the last time the user logged out or used the forum and was timed out. If the user opens the unread post list from the button in the header area then any entry tagged with 'new' will take them to the first unread post. This also applies to the new post list that members see by default on the front forum page (group view).
Unread post handling generally is explained in this FAQ: https://simple-press.com/docum.....ost-lists/

Thanks that is what I meant, sorry if not clear - jumping to the first unread post since the user was last logged in, in any topic. Usually in a forum this will happen simply when a user clicks on the topic title.
Going via the 'x topics with unread posts' icon and then after that 'new posts' certainly works but it seems a very roundabout way of getting to the same destination especially when users are just used to clicking a topic title.
Thanks for the reply anyway.
I think that should read 'usually in some forums'! It is by no means global. And more usually found in big, stand alone multi-functional forums.
There are actually many, many considerations and gotchas and no perfect model. I have laid down a challenge to our users before but am happy to do so again, If you can come up with a data and process model that works and does not require the building of huge database tables then we would happily look at it and see if it can be used.
But just consider that there is no method to even know if a user has read an actual individual post. We might be able to tell that the page the post is on has been loaded (and we do that now) but we can not get down to post level. Some users in the past have suggested the post date method where we compare the last visit date/time and assume all posts since then are unread. And we DO that now. But that doesn't take into account posts that remained unread when they last logged out. Like I say all kinds of gotchas. But give it some thought. We really are open to suggestions and changing the model if something workable and better comes along.

I'm probably not explaining myself very well again as I'm not really asking for anything that the forum doesn't do already with the 'x topics with unread posts' icon.
At the moment if a user clicks on a topic he is taken to the first post in that topic. I think it would be better if he were taken to the first unread post instead. My definition of unread post is the same as yours, ie if a topic is clicked on then when the user logs out or is timed out then all the posts in the topic are considered read. So the only unread posts in that topic when he logs back in will be posts that have been made since. Obviously I wouldn't expect a forum to track whether each post has been physically read or not, if the topic is opened then it is assumed the posts are all read.
Currently he can achieve this but he has to click the unread posts icon and then 'New' on the list of topics. So as you can see it's nothing new just a simpler way of doing the same thing and my users are used to just clicking the topic title and being taken to the first unread post so it's a bit of a change for them.
Brilliant forum software by the way. I looked at everything out there, installed most of them and this is far and away the best for easily integrating into a Wordpress site. Very happy!
