Afraid that's not simple press.. You WordPress install handles the registrations and users... Simple Press is a plugin for WordPress and just sits on top..
If your wp install is not sending emails, I would recommend an Smtp plugin for WP such as hgk smtp plugin... It can resolve some wp issues with emails...
