I'm running the newest version of Wordpress and the 4.5.1 Simple-Press.

 

I'm considering upgrading to the v5, but want to make sure there is nothing else I need to do before downloading the file and uploading it to the plugins.

assuming latest wp means wp 3.3.1, nope... just follow directions in our codex: http://codex.simple-press.com/.....tallation/

of course, just to be safe, make a db copy before you begin...
