Basically, I think, you are looking at a WP theme that doesn't play by the rules and the standard API. Go to the forum admin > Integration > Page and Permalink panel. There are some display options down there to try and cope with errant themes regarding mutiple displays etc. Try those one at a time to see if they help.

'Force strict use of API' makes forum disappear altogether.
'Limit forum display to within WP loop' does display theme in the right place (between WP theme's header and footer, and boxed 800 px) but without the graphics (overlay?)
Other options make no difference.
Switched back to css only theme.
Got a passable forum lay out...
But then the next problem pops up. I added the page called 'Forum' to the menu (with the display title 'Forum'). But it displays in the menu as; 'Welkom op het forum | NLP Masters 2014 | Forum'. Why on earth does it do that?
I am getting dishearted....
probably because the page title and nav menu title (uses similar) are the most overused items... seems every theme and plugin wants to get a hold of theme and change (not incorrectly either)... so you end up with the various requests fighting each other...
try going to forum - options - display settings and removing the page title...

Personally before doing anything I would shoot off a quick question to your hosting support to ask them if there is any reason in the Apache/PHP configuration why you should not be able to load a php file as a CSS file in the format:
<link rel='stylesheet' id='sp-theme-css' href='http://simple-press.dev/wp-content/sp-resources/forum-themes/default/styles/default.php?color=cool-blue' type='text/css' media='all' />
and if so what is the reason. If they say there is none then we can perhaps work out what in the Wp theme is the problem

I asked them, and this is what they said:
Looking at this issue you may just need to add a add-handler to make this function properly. I am not quite sure what it is you are trying to do so I am not sure what else to look into on this account.
I have no idea what it means, I hope your do?
I can ask them more questions, they are pretty responsive.
unfortunately, we have not been able to get a straight answer from the handful of hosts where this has been a problem... wish we knew what handler they require because 99% of the hosts simply allow for php processing of css files... if we could find out, we could attempt to handle it in our code...
