Having several groups with 10+ forums each makes the first look very confusing. How can I set up SP, that at first glance only the groups are shown. Clicking on one group shows the corresponding forums?

The default is for the groups to initially be open. You can change this by a simple edit to the SP theme template. Just set the default argument to closed. You can probably get what you need from the codex page:

Note that when a user visits any settings they change - opening/closing groups - will be stored in a cookie so that on their next visit to the page the state will be resumed.
As always we recommend that you create your own SP theme so that any customisation is not lost during a future update. (http://codex.simple-press.com/.....g-a-theme/)
