you will find that function called iin your sp theme, in the spGroupView.php template file... just set the default to closed instead of open...
be sure to make your own theme instead of editing ours... see: http://codex.simple-press.com/.....g-a-theme/
and since it works with a default wp theme, more evidence that is the wp theme you are using...

managed to take a quick look to see if we could do it from wp theme editor... and afraid not... this theme, has multiple levels of directories and files... the wp theme editor only lets you go one deep...
so the file you are looking for is likely in the lib/functions subdir of the main theme dir...
so you will either need to zip up the theme and email it to us at support at simple-press dot com... if you email, please link to this topic so we know what it is about... or you can provide us with ftp access so we can actually get at the needed files...
or try looking in that directory I mentioned and see if you can find it...
