this is a long standing WP issue... WP handles all the registrations and emails... and is known to have some issues especially if one is on shared hosting...
the problem usually is that by default wp send the emails from wordpress@yourdomain.com... and some email servers will refuse to send those emails if that email address does not actually exist on your server...
the best solution is to just install a smtp plugin for WP which allows you to define the default address and name... we usually recommend HGK SMTP...

Odd - that plugin won't work for me, and neither will any other SMTP plugin I download. I keep getting an error when I try to do a test message. I believe this is a Worpress+GoDaddy issue, as I'm seeing lots of discussion about this particular issue in relation to GoDaddy. I'm going to contact their support, and I'll post my findings here in case anyone else is experiencing the same thing. Thanks for your help and suggestions!
okay... please let us know what you find...
