Support Forum
Hey sptab,
I have moved this question to it's own topic.
It's really for linking to downloads, or external pages / websites, but you can use it to take you to any URL.
Basically, create a new topic, and underneath the editor - press the options button, and select 'Create a Topic Redirect'. It will open up an input box and instructions. Should be pretty straight forward!
You could have it redirect to a new topic or post by using the 'this posts permalink' button above a post, copy the URL, and use the URL for the topic redirect.
Hope this helps, shout if you need any further assistance
Hello Ike,
Got it, works fine, thank you.
I quickly checked the HTML source code for the "redirect topic" before it moves to the linked page.
I noticed it just ends with a javascript redirect using window.location and the HTML of the page stops here.
I am not sure this method is the best (specially for SEO) compared to a proper server side url redirection (like 301 redirect) ?
Cheers.
I would probably agree from a purist perspective, but in practice not sure how much difference it would make...
Implemented the way it is, allowed it to be done pretty easily... doing a server side redirect would have been much more complex and perhaps even outside the scope of what we were trying to do..
If you wanted to do it that way, I would recommend a full blow wp redirection plugin... Then just create a standard topic in the forum and have the plugin redirect it for you... extra step, I get it... maybe some day we can look at expanding the scope of that plugin... and of course, we could take an update from the user community too...

Thanks for your feedback Mr Papa.
I'll be testing the plugin for a few days as it is now and will check if it behaves right in term of SEO, if that's not the case, I'll eventually modify it to make server side 301 redirects if it's not too difficult to modify the headers in a WP page from SP code.
I don't know if it is supported yet, but I don't see any area where I could modify the Optional Description in a Topic Redirect already in place, same for the redirection link url (as the post in the topic that serves as redirection can't be edited).
Cheers.
You should be able to edit the topic description using the admin toolset button that pops up when hovering over a topic in group view (as far in as you can get with a redirect) and clicking 'Edit Topic Title' which will allow you to edit topic title, slug, and topic description..
As for the link, I see your point. I think since it's just a link it's not too difficult to delete it and make a new one, but yes, it does seem to be lacking the ability to edit the link itself...
