Hi again ~
I did as requested and disabled all plugins, reverted to wp2013 theme, and looked at the js errors in the browser console.
I think the errors are the same except for a few at the bottom of widgets not being defined when the plugins are actiuvated.
I have attached here the list of errors with and without the theme and plugins.
Whatever the problem is has therefore survived multiple WP core updates.
Its interesting that the only functionality that seems to be broken is Simplepress.
Hey Dan,
I'm not seeing any of those when I look at your live site. The only ones I see are:
TypeError: a.widget is not a function mouse.min.js:11:161 TypeError: a.ui is undefined resizable.min.js:11:133 TypeError: a.ui is undefined draggable.min.js:11:133 TypeError: a.widget is not a function button.min.js:11:633 TypeError: a.widget is not a function dialog.min.js:11:185 TypeError: a.widget is not a function menu.min.js:11:136 TypeError: a.widget is not a function autocomplete.min.js:11:145 TypeError: a.widget is not a function tooltip.min.js:11:136 TypeError: a.widget is not a function progressbar.min.js:11:123 TypeError: g.widget is not a function sp-plugin-scripts-desktop-header.js:83:1943 TypeError: a.widget is not a function tabs.min.js:11:123 TypeError: jspf(...).tooltip is not a function forum:1229:1
The additional TypeError's you are seeing are to do with your install of Firefox by the look of it, some of them reference FF directly in the file names, others from searching all relate to the browser itself. Is your copy of FF all up to date? It might be worth deactivating any FF extensions you have running, or try looking at the forum in a different browser - All major browsers have the 'inspect element' and 'browser console' functionality.
That would be my current suggestion. Disable FF extensions / plugins or use a different browser in it's default state. Inspect to make sure you're just getting the errors I've posted above. Disable plugins / WP theme and posting should hopefully work OK.
I know it's long winded but sometimes it's that kind of process!
unless you are doing this offline, fundamentally, this must be solved first
running that very old jquery is going to cause problems... it goes against the standards of wp to load a different version of jquery than that which ships with wp... no way for wp or other plugins to test with it and know compatibility...
of you can figure out who is loading that, we can help correct it..
is this wp 4.3.1 and sp 5.5.11?

Hi -
Yes this is the latest WP and SP.
I have done the testing as requested again this time using Chromes console.
Okay so you are right that with theme and plugins deactivated there are no js errors showing using Chromes console.
However when I activate only the SP plugin the Access denied error message is still there in the forum.
Also the add topic text field is the same uneditable box. You can see some js errors showing here with SP being the only activated plugin and wp2013 being the theme. This only happens I think after trying to make a new topic.

Interestingly there were no js error with all the plugins activated but without the theme. All the errors are in the theme!
I would hate to have to change theme and redo the whole look of the site.
Also - this is the same theme I have been using all along and had no problems with SP until a few months back.
All very strange ~
Any suggestions ?
is the theme current and up to date? when was last update for it? given its using a jquery library many years old, have too wonder if its just past its 'sell by date'...

did this just start? or did you upgrade? if so, what version of sp to what version?
hard to see what is up behind paywall... screencasts dont really help... is it happening for admins, users, guest? or some combination?
try resetting the permalink on forum - integration - page and permalink...
to investigate #2 would really have to see it without all those jquery errors getting in the way...

Mr Papa - This started months ago - I have upgraded the WPcore and the SP plugin at least twice since then without affecting the problems.
It happens for guests and logged in admin.
Okay I clicked the 'Update Forum Permalink' and it refreshed the page.
I then did the testing again with 2013 theme and no plugins other than SP.
The results have not changed at all.
I have already sent to Ike an admin login if you wish to confirm all this, or if you wish to see it without the js errors.
As I have pointed out, when the theme is changed all the js errors are gone even though all plugins are active.
And yet both the SP problems remain.
OK I've had a bit of time today to take a look and have hit a couple of roadblocks. The first one being that although the account you gave me was for a WP admin, it's not a SP admin account meaning I can't access any of the forum options.
Firstly, I went in and disabled all plugins bar Simple Press and got no JS conflicts. This meant that I was able to start a new topic, but only in one forum (GEOMETRY: Torus, Double Torus, Magnetic Fields, etc The rotating smoke ring is the only stable 3D wave form) because the others suffered from the permissions issue.
I then went in and enabled plugins one by one (except for the 6 you had deactivated) until I found the culprit - 'WP Post Tabs'.
I noticed you were running WP Super Cache, so checked the settings to make sure you weren't caching the forum page and it turns out you have it disabled, so I've left the plugin disabled too.
When activating 'Auto Chimp' on it's own, it throws a few header errors on the plugins page and the main site wont load. I saved it until last to activate and it seemed OK so not sure if it relies on another plugin being activated first. If you're not using it - it might be better to disable the plugin completely.
Next hurdle, because the background to your theme is black, it means any black text over it is effectively invisible. Noticeably today this went for login form and topic title / content, but will also apply to other areas.. I then disabled the theme (irrelevant to problems as far as I can see) and was able to see everything I couldn't see before was in tact.. This if anything will seriously affect the usability of the forum.
However, typing post content doesn't work. Inspecting the editor window shows that something from the WP editor is somehow invading it. Inside our editor is wp-postitem-wrap. I can't tell much about what's going on here with no errors or no plugins active other than SP.. Are you aware of any custom changes that might have been made to anything? It could also possibly be something to do with the editor in the back end for writing blog posts maybe as it's the same editor as the forum uses.
I then noticed that you have updates waiting for several SP plugins, but I wasn't able to update them myself as I got a permissions message. I'm not able to check things as I can't access the forum menu so you will need to update these yourself from the WP updater so we can continue looking.
So, I've narrowed it down to having these suggestions so far:
- Please change account status or create new account so myself and or Steve can access the forum admin menu
- Dont run WP Post Tabs. Not too sure what it does, but given the conflicts and errors it's throwing it's causing serious problems
- Update everything, including SP plugins and theme
- Optional - Fix black text on black background
Once #1 and #3 are done we can take another look and check out the permissions issue and see if the post editor problem is just the by-product of SP plugins not being up to date.
