Okay I updated the SP plugins and default theme and that fixed the access denied problem.
I disabled wppoststab as well, and everything is fixed ! 🙂
I had seen no messages telling me the forum theme and plugins needed updating so I was unlikely to stumble across that. Also I didnt realise you could be a site admin but not be a forum admin. Just mentioning this as it would have been a good place to start.
Re the black text problem ~
My approach is usually to check by hitting ctrl+A to highlight all the text on the page.
Is there any problem with checking this way?
Now that the forum theme is updated the colors are somewhat different anyway and this is less relevant.

Hey Dan,
That's great news, glad everything is up and running as normal again.
With regard to the update message it was the first thing I noticed I think, the little recycle logo on the top bar with a number next to it just for future reference.
As to the black text I was really suggesting that your visitors might have a hard time navigating, but I've just checked out what you have running now and it looks great!
