Need Help on How to Protect Uploaded Forum Content from

I have search the forums here and checked all of my settings but I can't seem to find a way to protect forum uploads from access by direct upload or hotlinking from another site.

I have a membership site with Visitor, Basic, Bronze, Silver and Gold Levels.  Different Forum Groups have different User Group Accessibility.

My problem is how to protect content uploaded to various forums from hotlinking or direct downloads?

Also is it possible for an user to select the folder they are uploading to, in which case I think I can protect the individual folders through my membership plugin.

i.e. - A Gold Level User could elect to upload Gold Level content to http://www.lawfulmoneytrust.co.....oads/gold/ and that folder could then be protected by the membership plugin.

I am sure I am missing a setting somewhere or have incorrectly setup the forums so any help or direction would be helpful.

Thanks

Greg

Unfortunately I don't believe you can upload usergroup specific content like this.

I'm a bit lost though, are you trying to stop people linking images uploaded to the forum on external websites (i.e image theft) or are you trying to stop people linking images uploaded in say the gold users forum to the silver users forum?

To add, if we are talking about silver members not being able to see gold members uploads, again I'm not sure if this is possible - would need clarification on that one.

I am a bit ignorant myself in these matters but can't this be achieved with some simple .htaccess rules? I am sure I have seen articles on how to stop external linking using .htaccess...

yes, hotlinking images can be prevented to some degree via htaccess... see:  http://www.htaccesstools.com/p.....rotection/

another way is with js, but its easier to get around...

Hey guys thanks for the info.  I have been having problems with my membership plugin and so have not made this problem a priority.

@Ike,

More specifically I am trying to block access to images, pdf, doc, etc that people upload to the forum which they would not necessarily want accessed by someone outside the community. Or docs which we as a site upload which we would not necessarily want accessed by non-members or members of the wrong membership level.

@Mr. Papa & Yellow Swordfish,

Is the htaccess protection the strongest I can hope for?

Thanks again guys for the prompt replies

All the Best

Greg

Great Plugin BTW!!!!

the .htaccess will only prevent hot linking, not users downloading the images...  with most membership plugin, such as wishlist, you can protect any folder on your server... but again, just hotlinking as its likely members will still be able to download...

I have seen some js implementations that prevent right clicking or downloading images, but havent seen any perfect ones...

simplest way for non members would be remove the permission to view links under the forums setting, not sure if that blocks image uploads though, never tried it

In a lot of cases your host has a way to stop hot linking images via your cPanel settings. Before you make any changes to your .htaccess fiile I would recommend you check with your host to see if they already have something in place you can use.
