After restoring my site from a backup simple press plugin is version 5.5.3 but the database is 5.5.4. Can you advise how I can correct this. Should I manually update the plugin or can I change the database version. my site is http://www.gcps.org.au

Updating the plugin software is the safest approach. I suspect you probably wont get anything offered via the WP update panel because of conflicting version numbers - which it will look in the database for - so you will probably need to manually make the update using FTP. Same goes for any SP plugins you may be using.

I suspected this would be the case. Do I just upload the entire simple press folder to overwrite the original plugin folder.

Apologies for not coming back earlier but it seems you have it sorted which is good news.
It is rare that a new release/update to SP doesn't make some database change - even if only a small one and therefore an older version of the software might show problems because of the missing db changes,
