Is there any means of validating email addresses of new member registrations in Simple:Press, to prevent them gaining immediate access to the forums if registering using a fake email address?

User registration - along with login and logout - are NOT Simple:Press actions as these are wholly in the province of your WordPress site and under the control of the WordPress core.
However, there are a few WP plugins available that will do what you want and I would suggest you try out the 'Theme My Login' plugin which is capable of doing exactly what you want and more. And it plays nicely with SP as well!
