so this is what is going on...
when the user signs up via buddypress, he gets created, he gets a role all fine... then the hook is fired and simple press runs... however, the user no longer has a role... so when we do our thing, since he has no role, he doesnt get mapped to user group... he eventually gets the role back, but its after we have done our thing...
why no role? and what happened to it?? no clue... I tried doing the same on a couple of buddypress installations and the role is not removed like that...
no we can probably handle this situation, but not sure why we need to - never occurred before...
you are running lots of plugins, and more plugins for buddypress... cant help but wonder if some of them are getting in the way..
can you disable the bp plugins and see if that helps?
in meantime, I will look into handling this unique situation... the primary concern is for multisite when users dont get roles on network sites...

standard, standalone buddypress does not seem to remove roles like you are experiencing. it seems that another bp plugin or other wp plugin is doing something...
Andy was suggesting contacting the bp team and seeing if they understood how a bp user initially has a role, but loses it during the bp registration process... we have not been able to track down where in bp its going south...
do you have other bp plugins?
