New posts/replys not displaying

We recently upgraded our forum and are running the latest version of Simple Press. (and the latest version of Wordpress)

We're having a problem where replies to existing posts and new posts are not displaying.

For example, as admin, if I reply to a post, it isn't displaying. If I log out and log back in, the reply will be there.

This is also happening for new posts and with non-admin users as well.

Any ideas as to what could be causing this?

Thanks,

Lisa

It sounds perhaps like you are using some sort of WP caching plugin. Would that be right? If that is the case then the forum page MUST be excluded from the cache as the data is too dynamic to cache in the usual fashion.

We are using WP Super Cache. Sounds like this could be the problem?

Absolutely. So you need to find the exclusions option that it has and put your forum slug in there. The default for that is, of course:

/forum

but you may have changed it.

You will also need to visit the cache plugin's admin and clear out the currently cached pages and it should start to take effect straight away.

We added the forum as an exclusion, and cleared the cached pages, with no luck.

Next we deactivated the plugin completely.

Unfortunately, the posts are still not showing up unless you log out and log back into the site.

The other problem we are having is that we are unable to delete posts as admin.

Both these problems started happening at the same time, so I'm wondering if something else is going on?

Any other suggestions?

Thanks for your help!

let's start with this:

Load a forum page. Click on the 'View Source' tool from your browser menus (can't say which menu as they all tend to use different places). This shows the underlying html of the page. Scroll down to the very bottom. Is there a small section of comments - just 3-4 lines - relating to wp-cache and - if so - can you copy and paste them here please?

Now - what exactly do you mean by can't delete posts? What actually happens?

Here are the wp-cache lines from View Source:

<!-- Dynamic page generated in 3.889 seconds. -->
<!-- Cached page generated by WP-Super-Cache on 2013-08-11 22:29:13 -->

In looking at the time stamp, that happened before I deactivated WP-Super-Cache last night.

RE: The deleting posts issue. Some of our members are reposting the same reply multiple times, because the replies aren't appearing after posting. When I logged in, I saw their multiple replies and tried to delete them, but when I click "Delete" (and I get the message Are you sure you want to delete this post?" the deleted post remains visible.

I even tried this on my own replies, thinking it was an admin access problem, but I can't remove them.

Something strange is definitely going on...

Yellow Swordfish, thanks for your help with this problem. I really appreciate it!

Sorry - but if it was deactivated and not drawing content from the cache there would be be no comments at the bottom of the page. That is why I asked you to look.

Deactivating wp-super-cache is not enough to make it go away. There are other files that also need to be removed as described in the wp-super-cache documentation.

However - there is absolutely no need to remove it. It can still function perfectly OK alongside Simple:Press. You just need to exclude the forum slug from the cache.

As to the deleting issue then I think we need to sort the caching problem out first as this could be an artifact of the same thing. Not 100% on that of course but the cache will muddy the waters,

Problem solved! I went back to square one and...

  • Reactivated the plugin.
  • Removed the /forum/ exclusion
  • Cleared the WP-Super Cache files and deleted old files
  • Re-added the /forum/ exclusion
  • Cleared the WP-Super Cache files and deleted old files again
  • Went into WP Super Cache Garbage Collection and switched it from fixed time to Timer with the collection time set for 1800 seconds

Then, added a new reply and problem fixed!

Not sure why it didn't work the first time, the only thing I did differently was change the WP Super Cache Garbage Collection.

But either way it works and it has sped up the forum and our entire site significantly.

Yellow Swordfish, thanks again for all your help!
