Well that depends on what you mean by 'nick name'. If this change is shown throughout WordPress - if they leave a comment on a blog post for example - that would be different to if this has only happened to the forum - and for the forum we term this the 'display name'.
The only way the 'display name' would change would be by changing the profile option settings. that is the only place where the code is actioned.

Sorry if I'm not using correct English terms. The site has been translated. Consider a nick name as a display name.
However, I found the plugin that was guilty of corrupting the customer accounts. It was not Simple:press.
People had not changed their display names, but something else was wrong. The public display names were replaced by true names revealing the user identities. In some cases the the display name had become just empty, so their posts only showed the writer to be a "member". What was confusing, a part of the display names were intact.
