Hi, I hope you can help, I've used simple press for years now and for a long while when you drop the box down to show the unread messages and go through them, it's not marking all of them as read at the end, can you tell me how I fix the problem.
It's getting frustrating for us all now. Is there a setting I need to change to get them to work properly?

Are you referring to the link in the forum 'head' entitled 'most recent topics with unread posts'? Or something else like the Admin bar plugin? I am not sure what 'box' you mean and how you 'go through them'. Can you describe exactly what you are meaning here please?

It's the drop downbox that shows the new/recently updated posts, it seems to hang and leave 2-4 posts showing unread, when you click you've already replied.
Not the admin bar, I was thinking of having my members access to the admin bar because that is a great way to read and reply to unread posts but I'd have to give them a permission in admin to allow it, that admin bar works great for me...lol
still not sure I follow you...
are you saying after using the quicklinks for unread posts (the dropdown for New/Updated Topics) and visiting each topic listed there, some still show red (unread)?
no caching on forum, right?

You want to make sure you're not caching your site in general with a WordPress plugin. The problem here is that although caching can speed up page loads, it's intended for static content. As Simple:Press displays on one page it's treated as a static page by a caching plugin, whereas the forum within the page is dynamic (always changing) which is where the problem comes in.
With some caching plugins you can exclude certain pages from being cached. If you have one and you can do that you will need to exclude the page the forum is on and then clear the caches temporary files.
