Hello my favourite plugin-crafters!

I run a forum at http://www.kontrasthlm.se/sf-forum/ which I upgraded yesterday. After the upgrade (when I log in as a regular user[not admin] I get the following error boxes on the forum startpage:

No groups have been created yet
Unread and recently updated topics
There were no topics found

I have browsed this support forum for similar issues but have found none.

When I log in as admin, the error message boxes are limited to one:

No groups have been created yet

There is groups though, since I have run them here before, and as an admin I can still visit recent threads via the "New/Recently Updated topics"-dropdown.

I have also went through all the setting and tried to deactivate all other plugins, have tried changing the Theme to Twenty Eleven 1.1 but nothing seems to help. Does anyone have a clue?

you upgraded from 4.5.0 to 5.0?  and its the latest 5.0 beta?  via svn, nightly or our download page?  build number please...

so is this a stock theme provided by us or have you made modifications?

It is build 5.0.0-7546 and the theme I am using for wordpress is the default theme "Twenty Eleven" in version 1.3. I have not activated any theme on Simple:Press, so its the default one, if that was your question.

I upgraded from 4.4.5 to 4.5 and then immediately switched to 5.0.0-7546. Via the download page.

Weird and most puzzling... especially as you don't get to see the forums when logged in as the forum admin either.

A few questions for background:

  1. Does the forum admin appear to be functioning normally?
  2. Did the upgrade go smoothly or were there any abnormal events?
  3. How was the V5 plugin uploaded to your server and what tools were used?

And perhaps a place to start - could you try downloading a fresh copy of the 'default' theme from our V5 download page and then overwriting the one that is there in the forum themes folder?

Yes, isn't it!

I could create an admin user for you guys if you want to check it out, just let me know.

To answer the questions:

1. Yes, it looks good and everything seems to work (except that no user sees any content)

2. The upgrade to 4.5 had a little glitch, which I have experienced at previos upgrades - this one:

/support-forum/simplepress-version-4-2/simplepress-forum-can-not-create-tables-in-your-database/

This time it couldn't be fixed with the suggested hack (which has worked before). Therefore I went straight to SP5 beta, and that upgrade went as smooth as silk.

3. I deleted all files in the simple-forum folder and uploaded the new simple-press folder via FileZilla for Mac.

4. For replacing the themes-files, where in the file-tree should I put them? I can't find a themes folder.

You may have just said the magic word! FileZilla.

I can't sit here and say that this is 100% the cause of the problem but it is typical of the sort of problem FileZilla does regularly cause. Before we can go any further I do recommend that you re-upload the plugin to your server using a proper and better ftp client. For the Mac I would suggest trying CyberDuck - free to use and proven (by me!).

Re-upload the entire 'simple-press' folder and I would suggest also re-uploading at the very least the 'default' theme.

If that part oif the original FileZilla upload went correctly then you will find this in /wp-content/sp-resources/forum-themes/default - if not there check the forum admin > wp integration > storage locations panel which will tell you where it is.

And then we can see if the problems persist after that.

Now I have done the following things:

1. Downloaded Cyberduck, thanks for the tip (it's way faster and nicer) - and uninstalled FileZilla.

2. Deleted the whole simple-press folder, uploaded a new one

3. Deleted the default theme, uploaded new one

But, unfortunately all problems persist. How would you suggest to go forward? Hopefully this bugsquashing gives something in the end, for SP aswell.

The thing that keeps me calm in all this is that I know that the forum content is there (because I can see it as admin when i use the "New/Recently uptated topics"-dropdown, and that the site is for a football team (soccer to you Americans) - the football season doesnt start until April 🙂 And of course the fact that I know I'm playing with a beta version of an open source forum. Which has excellent support!
