Non-moderator users can't see or access any discussions after upgrading to V5.2

After upgrading simple:press from V4.5 to V5.2, I'm experiencing a big issue with our forum. Mainly, when viewing the discussion area as a standard (i.e. non-moderator) member, no discussions are displayed nor are available to use. I only see this message after logging in: "The requested group does not exist or you do not have permission to view it".

To test this, I promoted my own account to Moderator and I can see all forums, then switched to other usergroups and it was all again unavailable. I've experimented with the settings and none of the permissions (i.e. Read Only Access, Full Access, etc.) are functioning for any role. The forum is only functional for Moderators.

As the forum is set up for an educational institution, we would like students to have standard access (as "Members") so that they can comment on threads and add their own views on the discussions. We cannot have them all set as Moderators.

I have been testing ad nauseam since we need to post updates prior to the Christmas/problem-with-post-edit-buttonoliday break and have run out of ideas/options as to how to fix. If you could please advise ASAP, that would be a big help.

If you need any specific information or have any questions, please let me know.

Thanks!

anything in your error log?  try forum - toolbox - error log...  also, look at your db... table sfauths... do you have some entries?

might be worth going to forum - toolbox- housekeeping and resetting the auths cache...

yeah, that is what I was afraid of... we had a handful of folks who when upgrading from 4.x to 5.x lost all their permissions...  I suspect if you look in your db with phpmyadmin or other, you will see an empty sfauths table...

did you customize the permissions a lot?  the easiest next step, if this is really the issue, is to perform a master reset on the permissions...  will get it back to default and then you can customize the permissions again...

Ahh gotcha, that's a pain but good to know. Yes the permissions were customized (by myself and another person).

How can we restore to what we had before? A master reset is not ideal, but sounds like the best option...?

not really any way to restore...  5.x does permissions a bit differently... and for some reason a half dozen or so like yourself seem to have had them all disappear in the upgrade...  and we dont know why...

so yeah, go to forum - permissions - reset permissions and it will get you back online... but you will have to go edit the permissions and re-set them up the way you want... sorry...

Thanks very much Mr. P - that seems to have done the trick.

Also, while I'm very grateful for your speedy support, I'm a little miffed that I had to purchase a $39 membership for a seemingly simple bug (that shouldn't have really been present anyway). I know this probably isn't the right medium to discuss though -- is there someone that I could chat with external from here?

I guess we have completely different definition of 'seemingly simple bug'...  with many tens of thousands of upgrades to 5.x, and this only affecting such a small handful, its certainly not simple.  In fact, we even managed to have a complete db backup from one of the affected users and it wouldnt happen again... they could restore, as could we, and the upgrade worked - every time...

a bug?  absolutely!  on that shouldnt be there?  we certainly wish it wasnt...  like any developer, we strive for zero defects...  but as any decent software developer knows, its pretty much unattainable...  doesnt mean you dont try to reach it...

not sure what you want to chat about...

Good point and you're probably right. I am likely overlooking so much of the complexity involved & not fully appreciating this upgrade.

But wow -- what a response on your end. Though I understand you guys are working your asses off to keep s:p in tip top shape (I'm not the only one who thinks so too - see http://wordpress.org/support/t.....or-support), this only reinforces some of the frustration I've experienced thus far.

...and I thought I was trying to be nice by attempting to move this conversation offline.

Thanks again.

sorry, was not trying to be argumentative... reading through my post again this morning, probably does come across harsher than I intended... apologies...

was everyone happy with the new support model?  nope...  and we knew that going in...  but this article probably sums it up best:
