Support Forum
Hi guys,
I'm running Simple Press 5.6.4 on my site and recently after some non SP upgrades, I'm getting weird behavior in the forum
- SOME (but not ALL) users can't hit the Add Reply button or send PMs
- It appears to be connected to logins (I can do it as admin, but NOT as moderator)
- Running a plugin/theme conflict test does not show any change in behavior...oddly enough! (I pushed to a staging server, disabled everything except you and it still does the same thing) The theme I'm using was working before, so I don't think it's that either.
What permission should I be checking here? Moderators have every permission available on my site, so this is VERY odd.
additionally, device, OS and browser can help look for common threads as well...
if you want to pass along a link, we can look for obvious conflicts...

It's not device or OS specific. I can see the behavior BOTH ways on my same device, just under different accounts. That's why I think it's a permission issue.
What permissions do I need to enable to be able to hit Send Reply?
The SAME button works for me if I'm logged in as admin, but FAILS if I login as moderator. That's not a conflict OR a device problem.
Using the 'Add Reply' as an example, there isn't a permission for generally posting as a user either has access to post or doesn't. If you don't have access to post you shouldn't ever see the 'Add Reply' button.
As far as Private Messaging goes, there is only one permission 'Can use the private messaging system'. Again, this is an all or nothing permission.
My only hunch was that possibly if your users are mapped to WP roles (i.e WP member is SP member and so on) do you have anything running that might only run for specific WP roles? If it's something iffy it could be causing conflicts when those users are logged in. Just a thought.
In case something has scrambled the auths for members go to the forum admin > toolbox > housekeeping and run the task to reset auths cache. See if that makes any difference.
But fundamentally Ike is correct - if the user has no permission to reply there will be no button which suggests the issue might be more to do with a script conflict. Are you seeing any script errors in the web console?

I flushed the auths cache and nothing changed. BUT, I did see an error on the JS console regarding a content plugin I'm using--I've contacted them and will let you know if further action here is required.
This plugin appears to have some role-specific stuff in it, so looks like you're right on track...thanks for the help.
