This isn't a SP issue at all, just my grappling with what works and what I need.
The site I'm working on, AllAboutChile.com, really needs to be as available in Spanish and English as possible. I don't speak Spanish, so am simply building an English site. However, I'd like to make it as Spanish friendly as possible.
I've read http://codex.simple-press.com/.....alization/, but don't quite get exactly if this is what I want. When it comes to language plugins, I can't tell if I'm looking at a translator, or what.
So, I guess I have two questions. And I need to make this work as seamlessly throughout my WP installation as possible, including the forums, which are a major aspect of the site.
Is there a way to set up a simple option for users to select English, Spanish or both? Then, if they post they can mark it accordingly for other users?
Is it worth while to use a translator plugin? How much can they actually do?
I'm really in the dark regarding what I can and can't do in regard to this, so am simply looking for insight and a sense of direction.
Thanks for any help.
I think what you really want is our Language and Theme Selection plugin... its on our download page...
it will allow your users to see the forum in the language that they want...
you will have to grab the translation files for whatever language you want to offer...
more info: http://codex.simple-press.com/.....-selector/
take a look, try it out and come on back if you have any questions...

What do you mean by 1 feature work?
every piece of wp - core, themes, plugins, etc - needs it own translations... so whatever language you set for wp, should be (but doesnt have to be) the default language for forum... but we do offer a plugin so users can make the forum in their own language... but it will, of course, have no effect on wp... its on forum translations...

I guess that wasn't clear.
The site is a BP site, with blogs and other services. I'd like users to have a choice of languages throughout, to whatever degree I can provide it. The forum is probably the centerpiece of the social structure, but if they're able to choose English, Spanish or both for the site, it would be preferable that the forum was included, rather than having two separate places where they have to choose.
When they do make a choice, are they simply designating their views/posts as Spanish? Or is there more to it that I'm simply not grasping? If that link you provided has the answers, don't worry about it. I just haven't gotten to reading it yet.
Thanks
No, their posts wont be translated... those will be in whatever language they enter them... if you use a wp core, plugin or theme translation, it translates the WP stuff... any content is in the language entered...
if you want to translate the entire site, including any content (wp, bp or sp), you will need a translator instead that can just do a machine translation of the page... The google translator plugin (http://www.studio88design.com/.....translator) is good for that.. you can have it display a drop box at the top of page with languages to translate... if a user picks a language, they will have the page reloaded and translated by google (ie not perfect)...

I need to keep this as simple as possible to start. The SP plugin is working for the theme colors, but I need to get Spanish in there somehow. I'm sorry, but can't seem to figure out what on earth I'm supposed to do to make it offer other languages. I see references to it, but can't figure out what steps to take. A link?
http://codex.simple-press.com/.....-selector/
and
http://codex.simple-press.com/.....alization/
they really do cover it... basically, you download any language packs you want from http://glotpress.simple-press.com...
you put the language packs (.mo file) on your server... by default wp-content/sp-resources/forum-language
the core and admin (not used in the language switcher plugin) ones go in subdirectory simple-press...
any plugin language packs go in subdirectory sp-plugins...
and theme language packs go in subdirectory sp-themes...
then the language and theme switcher (you dont have to use the theme switcher part) plugin will find them automatically and offer them for translation...
again, this will NOT translate any of the posts themselves, just the site elements (think simple press, themes and plugins)...
if your whole site is in spanish and you want the forum in spanish by default, second link is how to do that... then it will be default for the language switcher...
